She put her hand in her ears tired not to hear the harsh words from the gatekeeper. The gatekeeper had been saying, "Hey, if you're a witch and you catch someone, it will be very hard to find a cure for them!"
He continued, "I've told you before, madam is not here. Why do you keep coming? Don't you have a heart? Are you so heartless that even a dog wouldn’t lick you? You're just a stubborn little girl, with those sharp eyes like a hungry hawk. You stare at people without shame. What’s wrong with you?"
Hannu slowly lifted her head and looked at him. His words hurt her deeply. Her eyes filled with tears, and her small lips started to tremble. Her face changed as sadness took over.
The gatekeeper thought she would argue back because, in his mind, young people these days never keep quiet. He stared at her, waiting for her to speak. But instead, she quietly stepped back. He thought she would leave, but instead, she found a spot by the wall, sat down, and rested her head on her knees. Then, she started crying—a deep, painful cry that touched the heart.
The gatekeeper stood there, watching her. He started to feel guilty. Deep inside, he knew he had been too harsh. As a Muslim, he realized he should have understood the little girl who always wandered near the gate. He had never asked why she kept coming back. He had chased her away many times, but she always returned the next day.
